Last year I covered the SOAR banquet for Southern Indiana Living Magazine where I often contribute event photography, and I enjoyed the event so much that I volunteered to come back this year. The founder, Leslie Thomas was my next door neighbor in Greenville, Indiana when I was in high school. I love to see how God is using her in this ministry that she started about 15 years ago. The Healing Hearts Banquet was held on February 27th at Wesley United Methodist Church in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. There were silent auction items and raffles and a live auction along with a wonderful dinner and awesome cheesecake for dessert (or apple pie ala mode!)
Along with the auction there was a panel of women who shared about how they had found healing through Jesus with the help of the SOAR program, and beautiful music. My absolute favorite part of the event was the live artists who had stations set up around the room and produced pieces that night for the live auction. I wanted to highlight one of the paintings that was created during the evening by Megan Boone. I took the first picture as she was signing the back of a blank canvas and very quickly the canvas was filled with writing. The words were the lyrics to the Matthew West song, Forgiveness. Interestingly, Matthew West also has a song about sexual abuse called Broken Girl, but the song Forgiveness to me speaks more to the freedom that we experience when we do what seemingly can’t be done – forgive those who have harmed us. The lyrics remind us that it always goes to those that don’t deserve it and that the pain is real. The song goes on to remind us that we are only asked to do what God has already done for us and that in doing so, we are the prisoner that is freed. Soon the lyrics were covered in paint and a beautiful girl emerged complete with little wings. I was amazed at how quickly the painting was created. It was auctioned off only couple of hours after it was started. Isn’t it beautiful?
So let it go and be amazed, By what you see through eyes of grace, The prisoner that it really frees is you. Forgiveness.
